Rongo University is preparing to set up a permanent constituent college at Migori Teachers Training College, a major step aimed at expanding access to higher education within Migori County.
At a consultative forum chaired by Suna West MP Peter Masara, stakeholders agreed that Migori TTC will in due course be transferred to Kwa-Suna West Sub-County, where 30 acres of land have already been secured. This relocation will allow Rongo University to take over the existing campus and maximize its facilities.
Masara further disclosed that 90 acres at Lichota have also been earmarked for the establishment of an additional education complex. Currently, Ksh13.5 million from the NG-CDF kitty is financing the construction of six lecture theatres at the TTC, while a further Ksh100 million has been earmarked for the new TTC premises. Discussions are also underway to secure funding for hostels through the government’s affordable housing initiative.

Rongo University’s Prof. Wilson Otenga stated that the constituent college, which opened in May, 2025 with 55 pioneer students, is on a steady growth path as more learners are expected to report in September. He stressed that the partnership with Migori TTC, an institution serving the region since 1981, is designed not to weaken it but to safeguard and strengthen its legacy.
The Board of Management (BOM) of Migori TTC confirmed that they had consented to the transition on the understanding that the college would continue operating at its new site.
The initiative is being seen as a turning point for the county’s academic landscape, with expectations that it will transform Migori into an educational hub with broader prospects for future generations.
