A third year student at Rongo University has commited suicide by hanging himself using a rope tied on a tree next to his hostel.

The student, who has been active in student politics, was taking Bachelor of Arts in Education; Mathematics/Chemistry at the institution was found dangling from the tree yesterday morning.

While confirming the incident, the university’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Samwel Gudu said that they have not yet established the reason behind the act and that investigations have commenced.

“The police were here after the incident and his body has since been taken to the mortuary as investigations into the matter to unravel the cause of suicide have been started by both the police and the university’s security team,” said Gudu.

Gudu also disclosed that the school fraternity was in shock following the incident since the 22-year old student who has been identified as Collins Kipkirui had not shown any signs of depression or stress that the school management is aware of.

He noted that the body was found by students rushing for morning lectures at the university residing at the White House hostel.

“The student did not leave any note behind before committing suicide that would explain his actions and therefore we are relying on the investigations and postmortem results. We have since called and informed his parents of the unfortunate incident,” he added, noting that the deceased has been a jovial student who has in the past been contesting in some of the leadership positions at the institution.

Colleague students at the university also confirmed that the deceased was jovial the previous evening and were still in shock of the incident.

South Kamagambo Chief, Joseph Nyamanga has confirmed that the body is at Rosewood Hospital Mortuary as investigations are ongoing.

Nyamanga noted that the case is being treated as normal suicide incident without any foul play though are open to any more information that would help solve the case.
