The residents of Suneka town in Kisii County have expressed fears over a road construction that is risking lives of school going children along Kisii-Suneka road.
They said the government took a good step in the face-lifting of the nearby schools but they did not take into consideration of security measures during the construction of the road.
Led by former Suneka School Chairman, Simon Ondigi, they asked the contractor to build a bypass that will assist the school children to cross easily without facing any threat from construction in progress.
“We are not against the road progress but we are concerned about the security of our children,” said the chairman.
They named the most affected area as Riamasagara, Stage Miwa and Itierio School junction.
Ondigi said that pupils leaving school at Itierio, Kisii Progressive Academy and Ekerubo take longer routes to reach their homes as a result of the construction barriers that exposed them to risks.
Responding on the issue, Kisii County Commissioner Kessee admitted that they were sorting issues to do with traffice congestion but assured the parents that security measures had been put in place.
“We are in touch with the construction company who has assured us about the safety,” he said.
The County Commissioner asked parents to take care of their children as they go home for holiday to avoid any possible enticement that might lead them to stay.
At Nyabisase Secondary of Bobasi Constituency, parents were told to guard their children against involving themselves in bad company during the holiday.
Addressing parents, teachers and students, Masige Ward MCA Jacob Barongo told parents to caution their children against indulging in pornography which he said is misleading.
“Monitor their movement because every step they take especially when they are exposed to social media alters their minds,” he said.
The Member of County Assembly asked parents to pay fees in advance when schools reopen to prevent them from being sent home by principals.
