Rioting students of Karia Boys set their dormitory on fire

A massive fire at Karia Boys High School in Kirinyaga County has destroyed property valued at millions of shillings.

The Sunday night blaze disrupted normal operations in the school, which is situated a few kilometres from Kerugoya town.

During the incident, a dormitory that accommodated 100 students was burned down.

Fortunately, no one was injured. It is suspected that students intentionally set it on fire after becoming unruly.

Attempts by Kirinyaga County officials to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful as the hostile students drove them away.

“On arrival at the school, the stone-throwing students chased us away. They even destroyed the windscreen of the fire engine,” one of the officials John Kiama said.

The students began rioting at around 10 PM, shortly before a fire erupted in the dormitory, destroying mattresses, beds, clothes, and other valuables.

Riot police had to intervene to restore calm.

“Even the teachers on duty were not spared by the students. They fled when the students confronted and threw stones at them. We were forced to call in the police to tame the students,” said Kiama.

The incident occurred just one day after students of Kerugoya Boys High School set a dormitory on fire. During the rampage, they caused widespread panic in the area. As a result, the students were immediately sent home, and the school has been closed indefinitely.

Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Allasow denounced the incidents and warned that individuals implicated would face arrest and prosecution.

“We are investigating the two incidents and those responsible will face the law,” he said.
