The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the government to increase capitation send to schools per learner to enable schools operate effectively.
In their resolutions passed during their 63rd Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) which was held at Kasarani from December 4, 2023 to December 6, 2023; the over 1,800 Delegates drawn from 8 regions resolved that the government should review upwards the current capitation allocated per learner upwards adding that the Pre-Primary allocation reviewed to Ksh5,000 per learner, Primary capitation allocation should be reviewed to Ksh4,000 per learner that for Junior Schools should be reviewed to Ksh22,244 per learner while that for Senior Schools and Special Needs Education institutions reviewed to Ksh35,000 per learner annually.
The union further resolved that the government should establish an essential minimum package to cushion schools and further revise some vote heads to minimize wastage.
KNUT has also called for the need for the closer collaboration between the admistration of Education institutions and Ministry of Education to avoid duplication.
In dealing with the teacher shortage crisis, the union has called upon Teachers Service Commission to employ appropriate staffing norms to ensure all schools have adequate number of teachers in relation to learner population, urging the government to allocate more resources for employment of adequate teachers.
The union has further called upon the government to make the learning institutions attractive in order to motivate teachers; further urging the schools, TSC, MOE to establish a uniform, compelling and consistent rewarding policy for all teachers.
Also, the union has asked the MOE and TSC to develop policies and strategies to recognize and reward teachers excelling in every aspect of learning including co-curricular activities.
