In West Pokot County, retired teacher Mr. Benjamin Seng’enge has earned a quiet reputation for his passion for reading, especially when it comes to education stories.
Popularly known as “Seng’enge ni wire,” he is one of the most devoted readers of Education News in the region.
Seng’enge began his schooling at Chepareria Primary before transferring to Kacheliba Mixed Primary School, where he sat for his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE). A top performer, he later joined Njoro Boys High School in the early 1980s, a move that broadened his love for books, storytelling, and music.
“Even in primary school, I loved telling stories and singing. That’s how my nickname came about,” he recalls with a smile.

After completing high school, he joined Egoji Teachers Training College, where his interest in literature and set books deepened. He also sang in the college choir, taking part in folk songs and set pieces, a passion he carried into his teaching life.
His first posting was at Kalokol Mixed Primary School in Turkana County, where he taught for ten years. Even then, Seng’enge made it a habit to buy a copy of Education News whenever it hit the stands.
When he was transferred to West Pokot County in the early 1990s, that routine continued faithfully through his years of service at Samor, Komol, and Tilak Primary Schools.
When Education News caught up with him recently in Kapenguria Town, Seng’enge was immersed in the latest issue, scanning stories on the latest news in the education sector.
“It’s my best source for what’s happening in education across the country,” he said.

Now serving as the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) Chairperson at Tilak Primary School, Seng’enge uses every opportunity to encourage parents and teachers to stay informed.
“During school meetings, I tell teachers and parents to read Education papers. It helps us understand what’s changing in the sector,” he noted.
His consistent readership is a testament to his lifelong commitment to learning, and to the important role education journalism plays in keeping teachers and parents informed.
