A retired primary school teacher, Florence Monyenye, escaped death by a whisker after a speeding truck brushed past her before ramming into several motorcycles at Keroka town, on the Kisii-Nyamira border, killing five people on the spot.
Monyenye said she had stopped by the roadside to buy oranges when the trailer veered off the road.
“I was standing by the road contemplating to cross when the truck bruised my right side as it sped past. From there, I don’t know what happened until I found myself in a hospital bed,” she recalled.

She sustained facial injuries and was treated and discharged.
The bodies of the other five victims, three boda boda riders, a trailer driver, and his conductor, were taken to the Keroka Sub-county Teaching and Referral Hospital and St. Catherine Ichuni Mission Hospital mortuaries.
Keroka Traffic Police Commander Peter Chege confirmed the fatalities and urged motorists and pedestrians to observe caution, especially during the ongoing rainy season.
Residents have appealed to authorities to erect speed bumps at the black spot, where three other people were killed in a similar crash in June.
