Retired defence chief installed as Dedan Kimathi University Chancellor

General (rtd) Dr Julius Karangi who has been appointed Chancellor of Dedan Kimathi University for a period of 5 years.

Retired Chief of Defence Forces General (Rtd.) Dr. Julius Karangi has been installed as the second Chancellor of the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.

President William Ruto, in a gazette notice dated October 27, 2023, said Karangi would assume his new role beginning November for a period of five years.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 38(1)(a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Julius Waweru Karangi (RTD.) GEN. to be the Chancellor of the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology for a period of five (5) years, with effect from November 1, 2023,” read the notice.

Prior to his appointment, Karangi was the Chair of the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) board since 2022.

Karangi has a long-standing reputation due to his service in the military, especially having led the historic operation Linda Nchi in Somalia. He had served as the KDF chief from 2011 until he retired in 2015.

Karangi, among other roles, will offer advice to the university board, confer degrees, award certificates and diplomas, as well as act as a link between the university and the Ministry of Education.
