Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse has strongly condemned the continued retention of Form Four leaving certificates by school principals, saying it jeopardizes the future of students.
“My humble request is to school heads: deal with the parents directly, even if it means agreeing on a payment plan, but please release the students’ certificates. They need them to pursue opportunities,” said Mutuse.
He was speaking at Kalulini Secondary School in Kibwezi, Makueni County during the commissioning of a semi-Olympic swimming pool, which he described as both a learning aid and a co-curricular facility.
Mutuse urged students to raise their standards and embrace global competitiveness, especially in this era of digital transformation. He also appealed to parents not to shame or discourage children who fail to join universities but instead support them in enrolling in government-sponsored tertiary institutions.
“The country needs both intellectual and technical expertise. We are moving towards Competency-Based Education (CBE), and skilled people are highly needed. A child not making it to university is not a failure, they may be gifted differently,” said Mutuse.

The MP further encouraged learners to nurture their talents, emphasizing that education comes in many forms and every path that puts food on the table is valid. He called on teachers to mentor and guide students toward their potential careers.
Mutuse promised to push for Kalulini Secondary School to be elevated to national school status, citing its academic and infrastructural merits. “Once the technical groundwork is done locally, I will handle the national lobbying. This is deserved, merited and not a political move,” he said.
He also pledged to fund the construction of a storey administration block and to personally support the school’s music band with instruments.
