Residents urged to plant trees to tackle desertification

Residents of Samburu County have been called upon to take advantage of the rains and plant different types of indigenous tree seedlings in order to increase forest cover in the region.
Speaking at Ledero Secondary School in Samburu Central Sub County during a tree planting to commemorate International Forest Day, Samburu County Ecosystem Conservator Godfrey Makokha said varieties of indigenous trees can do well under climatic conditions experienced in Samburu County compared to others.
“Planting seedlings of cedar, croton, mtamayu and podo trees can do well here in Samburu, cyprus and eucalyptus can also do well in Porro,” he noted.
Samburu County Executive Committee member in charge of Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Dorcas Lekisinyal also attended the event.
Lekisinyal said the County Government plans to plant 10,000 trees in ten schools to prevent soil erosion and protect water catchment areas.
