Residents of Sacho area in Baringo county have sued the management of Sacho High School over the land the school is built on.
They claimed the land is public property and that the registration of the school as a private school was dubious and done illegally without the involvement of local residents.
They now want the court to change the ownership of the school from a private institution to a public institution.
They also lamented that the school charges very high fees, a situation that hinders the peasant families around the area from enrolling there.
The more than 90 plaintiffs claimed the school’s registration as a private school
“The school was corruptly acquired and turned into a private institution. We only found out it was a private institution in 2006,” read part of the court papers.
The elders have sued the Ministry of Education and the Attorney-General.
According to Miguna Miguna, a prominent lawyer and advocate, the institution was built on public land and funded with public resources.
He further asserted that the school was staffed by teachers appointed by the Teacher’s Service Commission.
“The dishonorable and criminal habit of those in positions of responsibility and trust stealing public assets must end,” he exclaimed.
The renowned private school is owned by the late former president Daniel Moi’s family.
