Residents protest over declining academic performance in South Imenti schools

Parents protest over shortage of teachers recently.

Leaders and parents in the Abogeta area of the South Imenti constituency in Meru County have held demonstrations to protest the area’s dwindling academic performance.

The protesters held peaceful demonstrations and marched to the area of MP Shadrack Mwiti and the zonal education offices.

They were demonstrating against the declining education performance of the once-academic giants Kanyakine Boys High School and Tharane Day Secondary School, which had previously posted sterling national examination results.

They protested against the mismanagement of the two institutions, which has led to a significant decline in academic performance in the national examinations in recent years, as opposed to previous years, when they basked in academic glory.

They said the schools’ enrollments have also drastically decreased due to the mismanagement.

They held peaceful demos to force the government to take action to reverse the dwindling academic fortunes.

They claimed that despite their previous calls for action, the national government has ignored their pleas, forcing them to take the drastic action of camping at the two offices until their grievances are fully addressed.

They said that no action had been taken to reverse the trend despite calling for action against the mismanagement of the once-shining Kanyakine Boys High School to the education offices.

“Kanyakine Boys High School was once an academic giant, even once producing the best overall candidate in the KCSE results. It used to be one of the best schools in the country. Due to mismanagement, the academic performance has declined drastically. They have dropped from a mean score of 8 down to 5.

The same fate befell Tharane Day Secondary School, which had previously posted good results. We now want the government to act and ensure this trend is immediately reversed. We can’t just stand and watch as the future generation is wasted away,” said an irate parent.

The protestors regretted that the student population at Kanyakine Boys had declined from 1200 learners to the current population of 500 students.

They are now calling on MP Mwiti to intervene through the Teachers Service Commission and ensure that the two principals of the institutions are transferred. New ones are posted while the board of management is dissolved to pave the way for appointing a new one.

The staff at the MP office who spoke to the protestors admitted that they were aware of the challenges facing the two institutions and promised to find a lasting solution.
