Residents decry high number of underage girls working in pubs

Education Holiday Kisii

Residents of Keumbu town in Kisii County have decried the high number of underage girls being employed to serve as waitresses in the town’s pubs and hotels.

Led by Nyumba Kumi groups, the residents noted with concern that if the trend continues, many other girls will be lured by the quick money earned in the bars and opt to drop out of school.

The residents accused the police of thwarting their efforts of tracing the young girls and taking them back home for parental care.

They appealed to both Governor Simba Arati and County Commissioner Tom Anchere to move swiftly and apprehend the bar owners who employ underage girls.

Area public health officer Susan Nyaboke said that her group had started moving from pub to pub to look for underage girls working therein.

She warned those employing such girls of dire consequences when found.

The residents’ concerns come barely three weeks after Keumbu Division Assistant Commissioner Joshua Muthoka declared war on parents who failed to enroll back to school their daughters who had earlier on dropped out due to pregnancy.
