As schools prepare to reopen for second term next week, the residents of Nyamira county have asked governor Amos Nyaribo to facilitate quick disbursement of the county’s bursary funds.

Led by Reverend Abraham Ombuya of the Church of God (COG) they said that some children especially orphans depend on the funds and when delayed, may disrupt their studies.

“We appeal to the governor to ask Principals to be lenient with our children regarding payment of school fees,” he said.

Ombuya said that the church has established socioeconomic programmes in the county but decried challenges due to meagre resources.

The Reverend asked principals to identify orphans and children with single parents in their schools and provide them with guidance and counseling.

In another forum, Nyamira County Commissioner Titus Kiata has decried widespread drug abuse by the youth.

The Commissioner asked the area National Council Committee Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) Chairman Charles Nyakoe and his team to double their efforts against the vice.

He asked the police to close all bars around schools and asked school leavers to form groups and start economic activities such as brick making to generate income for sustenance.
