Pokot South and Kacheliba residents want postponed parliamentary elections to be put on hold until December to avoid further disruption of the academic calendar.

The elections in the two constituencies were postponed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following printing errors in the ballot papers.

The residents claim the new dates should not interfere with the school calendar, arguing that it would be  better if the elections are held when learners are not in school. They said December would be the best time since schools will be closed.

“We pay fees but it is unfortunate that our children spend more time at home.” Susan Cheprayi, a resident, said.

Mr. Phillip Kaptuya, another resident decried the time lost since schools closed.

“Our children have been out of school for two weeks already. We do not want any further interruptions in our children’s education lest we demand for a refund of the second term school fees.” he said.

This comes days after Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KSSHA) National Chairperson Indimuli Kahi said the government will extend the second term to give KCSE and KCPE candidates enough time to cover the syllabus and prepare for their final examinations.

“We want to give all KCSE and KCPE candidates together with all teachers enough time to cover syllabus and adequately prepare for national examinations,“ said Mr. Indimuli.
