Maseno University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Julius Omondi Nyabundi has urged students nationwide to remain vigilant against criminal elements intent on luring them into radicalisation, crime, and antisocial behaviour.
Addressing over 8,000 first-years at the main campus, Prof. Nyabundi stressed that universities are “prime targets for radicalisation and terrorist recruitment,” warning learners to avoid unsolicited offers from strangers or peers.
“Remain vigilant and take care of yourself. Repulse and report any suspicious approaches, as continued engagement may lead to dangerous and irreversible consequences,” he cautioned.

The VC also discouraged risky behaviour such as late-night movements, attending disco matangas, associating with drug peddlers, or entering toxic relationships.
Referring to past tragedies, including the 2024 killing of Multimedia University student Silvia Kemunto, he underlined the dangers of ignoring red flags.
Nyabundi reminded students to adhere to university rules, describing them as a “guide to success”, and urged them to seek counselling, avoid destructive company, and build positive peer support.
“Be your brother’s or sister’s keeper. This is your chance to make lifelong friends who will be invaluable in your future,” he said.
The VC, who also chairs the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), reassured students of the university’s commitment to quality mentorship and better infrastructure.
He also asked learners under the new funding model to apply for scholarships and HELB loans, even as he admitted that the 2023 scheme had left gaps for needy students. A replacement model is expected to be released in September 2025.
Finally, he warned against unlawful strikes, urging students to use proper channels, such as school deans and the Directorate of Student Affairs, to voice their grievances.
