A youth leader from the South Rift region, Artkeen Yebei, has formally petitioned President Dr William Samoei Ruto to consider naming Bomet University in honour of the former cabinet member Kipkalya Kones, who was one of the Rift Valley’s most influential political figures and visionary statesmen.
In a letter dated November 16, 2025, Yebei described Kones’ legacy as a beacon of leadership, service, and community development.
He noted that the late legislator championed infrastructure development, education, youth empowerment, and peace initiatives, leaving a profound impact on the South Rift region and shaping Kenya’s national political landscape.
“The naming of Bomet University after Kones would immortalise his values of service, sacrifice, and dedication to community development,” Yebei wrote.
He emphasised that such recognition would inspire young people across Bomet County and the more expansive Rift Valley to pursue education and leadership with the same commitment and passion that Kones exemplified throughout his life.
According to Yebei, Kones is still widely regarded as a unifying figure in the community.
Honouring him in this manner would not only pay tribute to his contributions but also strengthen residents’ pride and identity, while encouraging youth to aspire to public service and civic responsibility.
Bomet University College, which continues to expand its academic programs, infrastructure, and student enrollment, has become a vital hub for higher learning in the county.

Linking the institution’s name to Kones’ legacy, Yebei argued, would ensure that students and staff are constantly reminded of the ideals of integrity, leadership, and community service that the late legislator embodied.
The youth leader’s appeal underscores the importance of preserving the memory of local heroes while inspiring new generations to contribute meaningfully to society.
The request is now under consideration at the State House. If approved, it would represent a lasting tribute to Kones, ensuring that his remarkable achievements are remembered and celebrated for years to come.
With this initiative, Bomet County stands on the verge of officially recognising one of its most dedicated sons, linking education, leadership, and community pride in a lasting legacy.
