Relief for university students as HELB opens loan application portal

EDUCATION HELB UNIVERSITY

Applications are now open for the subsequent university undergraduate students’ loans for the 2023/2024 financial year, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced.

HELB has invited applications from Kenyan students admitted to government-sponsored or self-sponsored programs in public and private universities in Kenya that are recognized by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

Students should log in to the HELB mobile app, select the loans section, choose the type of loan, and accept the financial literacy form then update their details and submit their application.

However, applicants can also use HELB ussd option *642# if they can’t apply through the HELB app.

The deadline for HELB subsequent application 2023/24 is 30th September 2023 for Applicants.

President William Ruto on March announced that HELB was given enough money in the 2023-2024 financial year to lend to students across the country.

Speaking during his visit to Kisii County, the Head of State said his administration will do its best to ensure those eligible receive the funds to enable them to continue with their studies.

“I want to confirm that we have ensured that HELB is well funded in the budget. We have done this in the last two weeks, and you will now have money. Those who need HELB loans will get them so that you do not struggle with your studies,” said President Ruto.

Apparently, students will now be able to study smoothly after the government doubled HELB funds to Ksh30 billion up from Ksh15 billion according to the 2023-24 Financial Year Budget.

The budget estimates were presented in Parliament by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u on June 15, 2023.

Last Year, HELB was allocated Ksh15.8 billion resulting to some 140,000 students in public universities and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges missing State loans after HELB ran out of cash.
