The Chewoyet Primary School and the surrounding community in West Pokot County yesterday found a relief after the former Governor Prof. Lonyang’apuo, together with the donors, officially commissioned a new water project at the school.
The project, funded by Kainos Ministries Sunrise Baptist Church missionaries from West Virginia, USA, brings a lasting solution to water challenges that have long affected the school’s operations and the well-being of the local community.
For many years, Chewoyet Primary School struggled with inadequate water supply. Pupils and staff often relied on distant water points, which consumed valuable time and energy. The lack of clean water also affected sanitation standards, making it difficult to maintain proper hygiene and contributing to frequent illnesses among learners. These challenges had a direct impact on the school’s learning environment, with pupils missing classes due to water-related illnesses and the school administration struggling to maintain a safe and healthy environment for learning.
According to Prof. Lonyang’apuo, the commissioning of the water project on Tuesday January 20, represented a turning point. “With a reliable source of clean water now available within the school compound, pupils will no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water. The project will ensure that the school has sufficient water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and sanitation purposes. It will also support the school’s efforts to maintain a clean environment, which is essential for promoting good health and improving academic performance.” He said
He added that the project is more than just an infrastructure development, saying that it is an investment in the future of the community. “Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a critical factor in promoting health, education, and economic development. By addressing the water challenge, the project will contribute to improved health outcomes for pupils and the community, reduce the burden on families, and support the school in providing a conducive learning environment.” He said

Prof. Lonyang’apuo, who officiated the commissioning, expressed gratitude to the donors for their generosity and commitment to improving the lives of the people of Chewoyet. He noted that such partnerships are crucial in addressing the development needs of communities, especially in rural areas where resources are often limited. The project, he said, reflects the spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility in ensuring that every child has access to quality education and a safe learning environment.
The donors from Kainos Ministries Sunrise Baptist Church were present during the commissioning, and their involvement underscores the important role that faith-based organizations play in community development. Their support has brought hope and relief to the school and the surrounding community. The missionaries emphasized that their decision to fund the project was motivated by a desire to make a meaningful impact and to support sustainable development initiatives that improve the quality of life for vulnerable communities.
The water project will also have broader benefits beyond the school. It will serve the surrounding community, providing a dependable water source for households and small-scale agricultural activities. This will reduce the burden on residents, particularly women and children, who often bear the responsibility of fetching water from distant sources. With water now readily available, families will have more time to engage in productive activities such as farming, small businesses, and caring for their children.

Furthermore, the project is expected to support improved hygiene and sanitation practices in the community. Clean water is essential for handwashing, food preparation, and maintaining a healthy living environment. The availability of water will also support the school’s hygiene programs, including the promotion of handwashing among pupils, which is critical in preventing the spread of diseases.
The commissioning ceremony was a moment of celebration and appreciation. School leaders, teachers, pupils, community members, and local leaders gathered to witness the historic occasion. The atmosphere was filled with joy and gratitude as the community acknowledged the positive impact the project will have on their lives. The event highlighted the importance of working together to address common challenges and to create sustainable solutions that benefit everyone.
As Chewoyet Primary School begins to enjoy the benefits of the new water project, the community is optimistic about the future. The project stands as a symbol of hope and progress, demonstrating what can be achieved when partnerships are built on compassion, commitment, and shared vision. It is a reminder that development is possible when people come together to support one another and invest in the well-being of future generations.
