The government has released Ksh5.64 billion to publishers to accelerate the printing and nationwide distribution of Grade 10 textbooks as preparations intensify for the rollout of senior school under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The funds, disbursed on Tuesday, January 6, 2025 through the Ministry of Education, will partly settle long-standing debts owed to publishers and support the production of 35 approved textbooks and literary works for Grade 10 learners in public schools.

In a joint statement, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) Chief Executive Officer Prof. Charles Ong’ondo and Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) chairperson Kiarie Kamau confirmed that payments to publishers had already commenced, with 23 publishers set to receive payments for pending bills by Friday, January 9, 2026.

The government has also committed to releasing additional funds to clear outstanding arrears amounting to Ksh4.4 billion, enabling uninterrupted printing of Grade 10 textbooks.

Publishers have agreed to commence printing immediately despite phased payments. At least half of the required textbooks are expected to be delivered to schools by January 16, with full printing and nationwide distribution targeted for completion by January 31, 2026.

To support efficient distribution, KICD and KPA will establish a joint committee to coordinate logistics across the country.

The move is expected to avert shortages of learning materials as the first cohort of Grade 10 learners prepares to transition to senior school later this month.
