Rongo University has extended a lifeline to embattled student Chelang’at Mercy, allowing her an opportunity to complete her studies after the dramatic events that unfolded during last week’s graduation ceremony.

However, the chance comes with a firm condition: she must first clear her outstanding fee arrears amounting to Ksh 79,750.

On Wednesday, Mercy’s family visited the university to verify her academic status and seek clarity on what is required for her to resume and complete her programme.

The institution confirmed that Mercy is a legitimate student enrolled under the School of Information Science and Technology.

According to records provided by the university, Mercy successfully completed all her first-year examinations.

However, in her second year, she did not sit for any exams in both semesters, largely due to financial challenges.

She later resumed her academic journey in third year, where she undertook and passed all examinations.

In fourth year, she sat for her Semester 1 exams but was unable to sit for Semester 2. In total, she missed exams equivalent to one and a half academic years.

The university has now provided a clear roadmap for her continuation, should the arrears be settled.

Mercy will be required to undertake her pending exams in three phases starting next year: eight units in January, another eight in May, and the final eight in August.

If she successfully completes all the papers, she will qualify to graduate in December 2026.

Her family expressed deep appreciation for the university’s decision, noting that Mercy’s situation has been a heavy emotional burden.

However, they admitted that raising the required amount remains a significant challenge.

They appealed to well-wishers, friends, and members of the public to support Mercy so she can return to school and complete her studies.

This renewed opportunity, they said, is a beacon of hope — one that could restore the dreams of a young woman whose future was nearly derailed by financial hardship.
