State Department for Early Learning and Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Jwan now wants all private primary schools to get ready for the junior secondary programme by August this year.

Speaking to the press at Moi Girls Eldoret after visiting the school to check on its readiness for junior secondary, Dr Jwan said this will facilitate admission of students in January as they will be assessing in August.

“We are encouraging private schools to get ready to admit junior secondary learners come next year by building classrooms and laboratories as the students will be having basic experiments,” Dr.Jwan said.

He said  for a school to conduct the programme, it  must have classrooms with a capacity of 40 to 50 students, a laboratory for experiments, a spacious playfield and the basic requirements for a school. He also urges the schools to introduce a variety of subjects to impact students with more skills.

“I am impressed by some of the private schools like Potters House and Greenvale for their progress in embracing the CBC junior education. This should be emulated by other schools,” he said.

He reiterated that the ministry was trying to ensure there is a smooth transition from primary to junior secondary as this will reduce the cost of transferring from one school to another due to some schools not offering the secondary programme.

“What we have in mind as ministry is to ensure all private primary schools have classes for junior secondary so that learners don’t have to look for other schools but proceed to junior secondary in the same schools,” said Dr. Jwan.
