Parents in Nyakorokoro village in Gucha Sub-county are happy after the completion of footbridge connecting them to Ogembo town and the surrounding schools.
The bridge that collapsed six years ago had posed a perpetual danger to children crossing the river to go to school, who were forced to use the longer Sofaset- Kebirichi road.
“The completion of the bridge is a relief to our children and us because we will go to school and access the market with ease,” said Cecilia Buyaki, a parent.

She said that most parents who feared for their children wading across the flooded Gucha River had transferred their children to Sameta, Kebere and Maxwel Primary schools from Excel, Getare,Tendere and Ogembo Preparatory schools.
“My son was very happy to reunite with his old friends in the Junior Secondary School at Ogembo Preparatory,” said one parent who identified himself as Richard Ondicho.

The footbridge was constructed by the Kisii County Government through the coordination of Boochi- Tendere Ward MCA James Ondari.
The contractor Nelson Oduor said the footbridge cost Ksh10 million to complete.
“We are doing its final touches but I can tell you that so far it has taken 10 million shillings,” he said.
The bridge that was constructed in 2018 by the Bomachoge Chache NG-CDF collapsed because of poor workmanship. At one time, the then Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua, Kisii County Deputy Governor Joash Maangi and two journalists escaped death narrowly when it collapsed as they stood on it.
They four had suffered minor injuries that were treated at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Area MCA James Ondari thanked Kisii County Governor Simba Arati for completing the stalled footbridge, appealing to residents to use it carefully by not crowding to view the beautiful scenery.
