More than 800 learners and orphans from schools in West Pokot County can now breathe a sigh of relief after receiving bursaries worth Ksh6 million courtesy of Northern Rangelands Trust(NRT), European Union and USAID through Pello and Masol community conservancies.

Speaking while launching the bursaries at Marich RCEA Secondary School, NRT West Director Rebecca Chebet said the bursaries targets to boost education and change the mindset of residents from engaging in retrogressive practices and instead embrace education.

Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong urged locals to take advantage of the initiative and urged school heads to prudently use the funds to benefit learners.

Head of Livelihoods at NRT Organization Sammy Lesaita said the funds will help children from families who were hit by cases of insecurity and lauded the county and national governments for promoting peace in the area.

Most children whose parents died in banditry attacks along the Turkwel belt have been unable to pay school fees because of the high cost of living and drought. Others are out of school due to retrogressive practices like FGM.

Pauline Kori, a parent, thanked the conservancies for the bursaries.

Chesta Girls Secondary School Principal Patricia Nandi noted that most schools were about to shut down because of food shortage and lack of funds.

Masol Secondary School Principal Benjamin Siywat expressed satisfaction that enrollment in schools will now increase as a result of the bursaries.
