Reintroduce caning in schools, KNPA chairman urges gov’t

Kenya National Parents Association (KNPA) Chairman Nicholas Maiyo has asked the government through the Ministry of Education to reintroduce caning in schools so as to instill discipline among students.

Speaking to the press in Eldoret town, Maiyo said that parents should be allowed to cane their children in schools in front of the teachers.

‘This will prevent the unrests that are being witnessed in schools due to lack of discipline,’ he argued.

He said that when a student commits a mistake in school, the parents should be summoned to the school to discipline the child.

Maiyo condemned the recent unrest in schools and termed them as ill intended.

‘As parents, we are very annoyed with what our children are doing in schools because in the long run, the burden of repairing the damages is on parents. We want all those students who have been involved such acts to be arrested and charged so that it might act as an example to students with such behaviors,’ he added.

He further said that students should seek other ways of solving their problems instead of resolving to torch their dormitories.

“I want to call upon students to look for alternative ways of solving problems such a presenting their problems to the management. Teachers should also be ready to listen to their students since others neglect them leading to such unrests.” he said.
