The dire shortage of Science teachers and inadequate infrastructure for learners is a concern that requires urgent attention from concerned stakeholders.

Learners joining Grade 9 next year are going to face a lot of challenges, chief being inadequate teachers. This will worsen the mismatch between teachers and the subjects they teach in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

How can art teachers who are not qualified teach learners science? What mode of teaching is that?

To make matters even worse, most junior schools do not have laboratories to carry out science practical sessions, not to mention insufficient lab tools. This is despite the government encouraging more learners to take the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway.

The Teachers Service Commission should therefore prioritize the absorption of more Science teachers in the January recruitment of 20.000 teachers as announced by the commission CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia.
