Rarieda Sub-county in Siaya holds its first-ever Education Day

Leaders cutting the cake to mark the inaugural Rarieda Sub-County Education Day celebration.

In a vibrant celebration of progress and unity, Rarieda Sub-County in Siaya hosted its first-ever Historical Education Day at Chianda Boys’ High School over the weekend, drawing participants from all educational institutions—primary, junior, secondary, and tertiary levels.

The occasion “Embracing Collaboration in Enhancing Competency-Based Education” highlighted the increasing commitment of Rarieda to improving education through innovation and partnership.

The auspicious occasion began with an opening prayer by Rev. Father John Mary Oginga of the Catholic Church, setting a reflective tone for a day anchored in gratitude and vision.

The Chief Host, Hon. Dr. Paul Otiende Amolo, SC, EBS, MP for Rarieda, highlighted the critical role of NG-CDFC in funding the construction of classrooms, laboratories, and libraries across all levels of education.

“Education is not a favour—it is a right. Through the NG-CDFC, we are building not just classrooms, but futures,” said Dr. Amolo.

“Let us make sure that no child in Rarieda is left behind because of infrastructure or opportunity.”

He also lauded Rarieda Technical and Vocational College for offering job-ready skills in various fields, including construction, fashion, welding, ICT, and agriculture.

“Our youth must be equipped not just to seek jobs, but to create them. Technical education is our bridge to economic self-reliance,” he added.
The Chief Guest, Amb. Julius Kibet Bitok, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, in a speech read on his behalf by Nyanza Regional Director of Education, praised Rarieda’s track record.

“Rarieda is setting the pace in implementing Competency-Based Education,” the PS noted.

“The Ministry will continue to support such bold educational efforts through funding and policy support.”

He acknowledged the NG-CDFC’s role in purchasing school buses and the rising number of students benefiting from full scholarships.

Prof. Wilfredian Charles Okumu Bigambo from the University of Nairobi, with his signature blend of humour and wisdom, captivated the attendees with a keynote address on Family Life Education across all life stages.

“A child belongs not just to a home, but to the community. Raising them is a collective duty,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of discipline, storytelling, and drawing boundaries.

“When I was growing up, even myths like Nyawawa taught us caution,” he said to laughter.

“But let’s also teach our children truth, self-worth, and spiritual grounding.”

Sub County Director of Education, Stanley Shitanda, reported notable improvements in service delivery, teacher deployment, and institutional registration.

He said that the funds by government have led to increased infrastructure and learning conditions. Several participants echoed the importance of such a landmark celebration.

“This event has inspired my students. They now see education as something alive, celebrated, and worth striving for,” added Tom Oloo, a high school principal.

“This is only the beginning. The future of our children depends on the seeds we are planting today,” declared Hon. Otiende Amolo, to thunderous applause.
