County Government of Busia, in collaboration with NO ONE OUT Italy–Kenya and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), on May 6, continued its leadership empowerment programme for Vocational Training Centre (VTC) managers, with a strong focus on quality assurance and institutional development.

The capacity-building workshop, now in its second day, brought together stakeholders from Busia and Kisumu counties, including Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who are instrumental in shaping grassroots education policy and driving skills development.

Among the leaders present were Denzil Edungulot Musumba, MCA for Chakol South Ward in Busia, and Seth Okumu, Chairperson of the Education, Technical Training and Social Services Committee in Kisumu County.

Musumba praised the initiative, stating that the training would help address persistent issues within the vocational education sector. He underscored the importance of harmonized schemes of work and called for the establishment of a dedicated Executive Committee Member and Chief Officers specifically for VTCs.

“This is a step in the right direction. Our vocational institutions have faced numerous challenges, and it’s time we built stronger frameworks to support them,” he said.

Musumba also revealed plans to transform Amaase Vocational Training Center into a masonry center of excellence, pledging KES 2 million from the Chakol South Ward Development Fund to upgrade its infrastructure.

Okumu echoed the call for modernization, lamenting the outdated equipment currently used in many centers.

“Some of our institutions are still using decades-old engines and tools. This hampers the quality of training and directly impacts the employability of our youth,” he noted.

Both leaders urged TVETA to fast-track the creation of a national policy to standardise the management and operations of vocational training institutions nationwide.

The workshop reflects a growing recognition of the role VTCs play in equipping youth with market-relevant skills and highlights ongoing efforts to improve training standards at the county level.
