Pwani University has indefinitely suspended learning activities following a prolonged industrial strike by university lecturers that has disrupted academic programmes for more than six weeks.

In an internal memo signed by Acting Registrar for Academic and Students Affairs, Dr. Leonard Kiti Alih, the university Senate resolved — during a special meeting held on Tuesday — to halt all academic engagements for the remainder of the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year.

The decision comes after sustained work stoppages that have crippled teaching and learning, leaving thousands of students stranded and academic progress at a standstill.

“The University Senate resolved to suspend all learning activities with immediate effect until further notice,” reads the memo dated November 4, 2025.

The students have been directed to vacate the university premises immediately, with the administration giving a deadline of Wednesday, November 5, 2025 to ensure compliance.

The memo further advises students to monitor official communication channels — including the university website and student portal — for updates on the situation.

The institution’s management and the Vice Chancellor expressed appreciation to learners for their patience and cooperation during the period of disruption, acknowledging the challenges posed by the industrial action.

The lecturers’ strike, driven by unresolved welfare and salary grievances, has affected not just Pwani University but various institutions countrywide, raising concerns over prolonged academic delays and potential interruption of national university exam schedules.

Meanwhile, students have expressed frustration over the continuing stalemate, with many worried about financial strain, academic timelines, and uncertainties regarding resumption dates.

The university has not issued a timeline for reopening, but urged calm as discussions toward resolving the dispute continue.
