Pwani University mourns Albert Ojwang’ as a champion of justice and students’ welfare

The Pwani University fraternity and beyond are in mourning following the untimely passing of Albert Ojwang’, famously known as “Alberto Junior Januzaj,” a distinguished alumnus from the Class of 2021.

Albert, who pursued a Bachelor of Education in Kiswahili and Religious Studies, leaves behind a legacy of impactful leadership, unwavering advocacy for student rights, and a profound commitment to civic engagement.

From his arrival as a first-year student, Albert made an indelible impression. Described as “outspoken, charismatic, and deeply driven,” he quickly rose to prominence on campus by his second year.

He was a dynamic force in student politics, consistently challenging authorities to prioritize student welfare and earning widespread respect for his dedication to justice and fairness.

Albert’s leadership extended to a significant role in the Luo Students Association at Pwani, where he was revered as an “elder,” a testament to his wisdom and maturity that belied his age. His passion for leadership was further demonstrated through his pivotal role in campaigning for Fikirini Jacobs in the student presidential elections. Jacobs would later ascend to the position of Principal Secretary – State Department for Youth Affairs and the Creative Economy, a journey Albert undeniably helped shape.

His influence was not limited to the university campus. Albert effectively leveraged his extensive social media reach to impact political discourse and foster civic engagement. During the 2022 General Election, his online platform was instrumental in rallying support for prominent political figures such as Martha Karua and Polycarp Igathe.

Despite his political boldness, Albert was renowned for his deep empathy and kindness.

“Albert had this incredible ability to make you feel seen and heard, no matter how new you were to campus,” shared Cornelius Kibet, who was a Pwani student. “He was a senior, but he carried himself with such humility and genuine care for everyone. You could always count on him for a thoughtful perspective.”

This unique blend of sharpness and compassion allowed him to guide others with a calm, mature presence, navigating campus life’s complexities with a rare understanding.

Athumani Hassan Mbangwe, former student union chair at Pwani University (2020/2021), expressed the profound sense of loss:

“His death has shaken many of us who walked the Pwani University paths with him. We have not just lost an alumnus, we have lost a rare soul, one who lived with intention and lifted others as he rose.”

The passing of Albert Ojwang’ has left a significant void in the hearts of those who knew him. In mourning his loss, the Pwani University community and his vast network of friends and colleagues are also celebrating his impactful life. His legacy of unity, purpose, and justice will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
