Pwani University launches School of Agricultural Sciences and Agribusiness to boost sector growth

Pwani University has officially launched its School of Agricultural Sciences and Agribusiness, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s efforts to strengthen food security, agribusiness development and agricultural innovation.

The event, held on August 6, 2025, was presided over by Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki. It signified a strategic investment in advancing academic research, practical skills and entrepreneurship in agriculture, especially for the coastal region.

The new school aims to equip students with technical and scientific expertise in agricultural sciences while fostering innovation in agribusiness and sustainable farming practices. It also positions Pwani University as a key driver of regional and national development by preparing professionals capable of addressing current and emerging challenges in the agriculture sector.

The launch brought together top national and county leaders in a show of unity and shared commitment to transforming Kenya’s agricultural landscape.

Attending the event were Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Ogamba, Principal Secretary for State Department for Science, Research and Innovation Professor Shaukat Abdulrazak, and Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy Fikirini Jacobs.

Also present were Pwani University Vice Chancellor Professor James Kahindi, Kilifi North Member of Parliament (MP) Owen Baya, Rabai MP Anthony Kenga, and Kilifi County Woman Representative Gertrude Mbeyu.

The establishment of the school is expected to unlock new opportunities for farmers, researchers, and agribusiness stakeholders, offering a platform for collaboration, innovation, and capacity-building across the region and the country.
