Police in Siaya County have launched investigations into an incident where a standard seven pupil of Kalenjuok Primary School in Alego-Usonga Constituency committed suicide yesterday.

The standard seven pupil who has been identified as Evans Onyango is said to have decided to take away his life following alleged mistreatment by one of his teachers.

According to Onyango’s sister Millicent Atieno, the boy is said to have returned from school yesterday evening and was heard complaining about that teacher before he was found hanging on a tree a few hours later.

It is also reported that the boy had not yet died by the time he was found hanging on the tree, noting that Onyango and her siblings moved with speed to cut off the noose.

Atieno stated that he rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital where he passed on while undergoing treatment since he had already sustained serious injuries.

Later, pupils of Kalenjuok Primary School together with some parents and community members walked over six kilometers in protest to Boro Chiefs camp while chanting slogans against the teachers whom they were demanding his immediate transfer.

This forced the intervention of Siaya sub-county Director of Education Mr. Richard Obonyo who calmed and convinced the pupils to return to school, promising to pursue the matter to ensure an appropriate action is taken.

The body of the pupil is currently lying at the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary.
