A Grade 6 girl from Chesingei, Elgeyo Marakwet County, is nursing serious injuries after allegedly being beaten by her stepmother — an incident that has sparked outrage and calls for swift action from authorities.

A Grade 6 pupil from Chesingei in Elgeyo Marakwet County is nursing serious injuries after allegedly being assaulted by her stepmother in an incident that has shocked the local community.

According to residents, the assault was triggered by the girl’s obedience and willingness to participate in various community activities — behaviour that reportedly angered the stepmother.

“I heard screams coming from the home and rushed to check what was happening,” said Susan Kiplangat, a neighbour. “When I arrived, I found the stepmother mercilessly beating the girl. She had already sustained injuries on her chest, head, and back.”

Kiplangat, who spoke to journalists at the scene, described the victim’s condition as disturbing and called on authorities to act swiftly. “This girl has suffered a lot. Government agencies must intervene and ensure she gets justice.”

The girl, whose identity is being withheld due to her age, was rescued and taken to a nearby health centre, where she received treatment. She now says she is afraid to return home.

Her sister, Carolyne Koskey, echoed the call for justice, describing the family’s ongoing struggles. “We are going through a lot, and this violence has made things even worse. I want my sister to be safe and the person responsible to be held accountable,” said Koskey.

The incident has sparked outrage in Chesingei, with residents led by Abraham Kisang and Selina Kangogo strongly condemning the act. “This is unacceptable. No child should be subjected to such cruelty. The police must arrest and charge the suspect immediately,” said Kisang.

Area police boss Fanuel Nasio confirmed the incident and assured the public that an investigation is underway. “We are taking this matter seriously. The law will take its course,” he stated.

As the girl continues to recover, calls for justice and child protection are growing louder in the region, with locals demanding tougher action against those who abuse children.
