Vice Chancellors and other senior administrators from 47 public universities are meeting in Athi River to finalize the on boarding of admission procedures and other essential services in line with President William Ruto’s directive authorizing all government entities to embrace digitization.
According to Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Prof Julius Bitok over 1,000 services offered by public universities will soon be available on the eCitizen portal.
The campaign is expected to cut the cost of time and money for clients seeking government services as well as minimize corruption.
Universities can now track online and real-time revenue collection from the students’ payments and other services offered by the institutions.
According to the PS, digitization would further enhance transparency and accountability in all institutions and students will access all university services through the government’s eCitizen mobile application, known as Gava Mkononi.
“We believe that when all the services are on the platform, a student who wants to pay for a meal or a book can pay through the phone and the university can get the funds real-time,” he stated.
Universities joining the Citizen platform will thus aid the Kenya Kwanza administration in hitting its revenue target of Ksh4 trillion by June 2027.
Some of the services to be offered by public universities on the e-Citizen platform include: new students’ application, course registration, application for transcripts, employer’s graduates’ verification and verification of documents, library services and student portal.
Scholarship application, work study application, e-learning services, application for examination remarking, replacement of transcripts and certificates, application for retake, clearance application, student ID replacement and bursary application will also be offered on the platform.
Universities seek assurance that they will be able to access monies intended for day-to-day operations and other recurrent expenses on time.
At the moment, over 5,127 government services are available on e-Citizen, and a similar number is targeted for online end-to-end availability by December 2023.
The deadline for the migration of all government services is September 30, 2023.
