Public schools attained and dominated top spots in the second edition of the Pwani Oil Sawa Essay National Writing Competition unveiled at Kikambala in Kilifi recently.
Ashley Micheru, a Grade 7 pupil at Moi Nyeri Complex School clinched the first position while Joel Chelot from Nasokoi Primary School in West Pokot, Carol Shelmith Makena of Iveche Primary School in Embu, Deborah Wanjiku of Oshwal Primary School in Nairobi and Isabella Amanda of Ngare Primary School in Isiolo followed Mucheru respectively.
A total of 7,361 entries from all over the country took part in the writing contest conducted by Kenya Primary schools Head teachers Association (KEPSHA).
The essay writing competition which targets Grades 6 and 7 learners aligns Pwani Oil Refinery’s mission to refine the lives of communities around them by sharpening pupils’ creativity in writing and thinking skills.
The five national winners unveiled at Pwani Oil plant premises in Kikambala in Kilifi County received a three-day fully paid trip to Mombasa. Before the trip, they experienced an educational tour at Pwani Oil Kikambala plant.
Along with the goodies, the winners were gifted certificates, trophies and assorted gifts from the award key partners Sawa, Trufood, Kartasi Brand and Umoja Rubbers.
Speaking on behalf Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu, Quality Assurance and Standards Assistant Director Eliud Wambua noted that through such competitions, it was possible to gauge and test the quality of education the children were learning in their various schools.
“We must always keep positively challenging our children to think over and above their classrooms,” he said.
Pwani Oil Director Rajul Malde said: “We have been overwhelmed by the sheer brilliance and passion the participants displayed in the essays submitted.”
