Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department of University Education and Research Ambassador Simon Nabukwesi has urged universities to review their curriculum and course content so as to equip graduates with skills required in the job market.

In a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Director of the State Department Nanjakululu Wanambirifuma during University of Embu’s seventh graduation ceremony, the PS said that universities reviewing their curriculum will ensure graduates acquire high-demand skills.

Amb. Nabukwesi stated that with availability of modern technology, universities should embrace innovation and technology to impact the society positively.

He said that through research and innovation, universities will ensure spread of variety of technologies across the country.

“The Ministry of Education appreciates the role of universities in generation of knowledge and necessary innovations in technology to spur sustainable economic development. Our nation needs a well-educated workforce to promote community growth and development,” said Nabukwesi.

The PS urged universities to not only create a pool of thinkers to be the epicenter of socio-cultural development in the country but also upscale the quality of research and innovation in their programmes in order to ensure they compete internationally with other universities.

The University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Daniel Mugendi urged the graduands to apply the skills acquired creatively upon the numerous opportunities awaiting them.

Prof. Mugendi encouraged them to focus on being employers and not employees through creating their own employment schemes.

He further advised the graduates that while creating their personal brands they should always ensure that integrity remains their true North.

Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji encouraged the graduands not to be choosy while looking for employment.

In the ceremony, 1,146 students were awarded Certificates, Diplomas, Degrees, Masters Degrees and PhDs.
