PS Suda condemns attacks on teachers

Gender and Social Development Principal Secretary Colleta Suda has condemned the rise of indiscipline in schools following reports of students assaulting teachers.

“The rate at which students are attacking teachers is alarming and should not be entertained,” the PS said when she inspected schools in Migori County.

Suda, who was accompanied the East African Community PS Kevit Desai, Migori County Commissioner Boaz Cherutich and other government officials, linked the incidents to the prolonged closure of schools because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

She said schools’ guidance and counseling departments should be strengthened.

Last week, three incidents of learners assaulting or threatening teachers were reported.

On Tuesday, a student reportedly stabbed two teachers at Kisii School and a day later, a student at Mokwerero Secondary School in Nyamira County assaulted the deputy principal.

At Kilimanjaro Primary School in Migori County, a pupil is alleged to have threatened a teacher.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Migori branch Executive Secretary Caleb Opondi asked the government to put in place measures to protect teachers from attacks.

He called for unity of teachers and parents in imparting discipline to learners.

During the visit, Suda rooted for the open-air learning proposed by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha.

“Congestion remains a challenge. If the weather is conducive, I encourage schools to embrace open air learning,” she said.

Among the schools the team visited was Kadika Girls Secondary School.
