The Ministry of Education has launched and rolled out the ‘TVET Greening Programme’ at the Eldoret National Polytechnic.
While speaking during the launch, TVET Principal Secretary, Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, said the programme will see TVET institutions across the Country plant over one billion trees in the next five years.
“We have launched the TVET Greening programme and our aim is to ensure that our institutions also play a role in increasing the forest cover. During this rainy season, we are targeting to plant over 15 million trees, we have decided to start the programme now since the earlier, the better,” said the TVET Principal Secretary.
She called upon TVET Institutions across the country to join in the initiative by planting trees in support of President William Ruto’s bid of planting over 15 billion trees in the next ten years.
“We are encouraging all TVET principals to join us in the move of greening our Countries, Let us ensure that our institutions have enough trees,” she added.
The PS also presided over the launch of a Biogas Plant at the Eldoret National Polytechnic which will be used for cooking and lighting needs in the institution phasing out the use of firewood.
“The project will be vital in the production of energy to be used at the polytechnic,” the PS said.
The Principal Secretary for Forestry, Ephantus Kimani, said that they have donated 2.9 million tree seedlings that will be planted in TVET Institutions across the Country.
“We will also donate a million seedlings to every TVET institution to help the Country in increasing the forest cover. Our aim is to ensure that we increase the current forest cover,” he said.
The Eldoret National Polytechnic Chief Principal Charles Koech applauded the Ministry of Education for the Initiative saying that it will help in increasing the forest cover and mitigating effects of climate change.
It is my hope that they will take up other initiatives for greening not only the TVETs but also the ministry as well.
“We thank both the PSs for choosing our institution for the launch of the ‘TVET Greening Program’ we will help you achieve the required forest cover by planting many trees in our institution,” said the principal.
He said it will help the Country to increase forest cover.
“I call upon Kenyans to take advantage of this rainy season and plant trees since they are beneficial for the soil as it fixes Nitrogen and helps to increase forest cover,” said the Eldoret National Polytechnic Principal.
