PS directs TVET colleges to plant 600 trees

Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Dr. Esther Muoria has urged all TVET institutions to take a leading role in supporting the government’s tree planting initiative.

Speaking during Mukurwe-ini Technical Training Institute’s inaugural graduation ceremony, Dr. Muoria urged every TVET institution to at least plant 600 trees this year and further support the nearby primary and secondary schools.

“I have already directed all TVET institutions to start tree nurseries (species suitable to their specific regions) and take advantage of the current rains. The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has agreed to partner with us,” said Dr. Muoria.

Her sentiments follow the move by President William Ruto to launch the 15 billion trees by 2032 initiative during a tree restoration program at Ngong Hills Forest where he planted 56 trees to mark his 56th birthday.

According to the president, the initiative will help combat the effects of climate change, which has unleashed calamities such as droughts, floods, unpredictable rainfall patterns and disease and pest outbreaks.

Dr. Muoria further noted that the government is keen on up-skilling TVET trainers and the staff in the institutions.

She stated that the State Department and Development partners have started a Public Finance Management (PFM) and Leadership and Governance training for Senior Staff in all TVET institutions through the Kenya School of TVET.

“The State Department is in discussion with key institutions outside our Ministry with a view of supporting us in re-skilling our trainers in CBET pedagogical delivery and in the practical use of the state of art equipment available in our TVET colleges.” She concluded.
