Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Amb. Prof. Julius Bitok has urged teachers to embrace the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the effective implementation of the Competency Based Education (CBE) curriculum.

Speaking at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) during the opening of a capacity-building workshop for Senior School Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Heads of Department, Prof. Bitok said AI will play a crucial role in improving curriculum delivery and learning outcomes.

The workshop which kicked off on Monday aims to equip teachers with advanced pedagogical and technological skills in preparation for the transition of Grade 9 learners to Grade 10 in 2026.

“All our schools in the country will have STEM pathways. As we prepare for the transition of two million learners, we are training teachers on AI to ensure they are ready to manage the STEM curriculum,” Prof. Bitok said.

He noted that AI will help teachers prepare lesson plans and schemes of work more efficiently, personalize learning to meet individual student needs, and identify struggling learners early for targeted support.

CEMASTEA CEO Jacinta Akatsa emphasized the key role Heads of Department play in implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum, noting that school principals have already received similar training to strengthen their instructional leadership.

The CEMASTEA workshop is part of a nationwide programme, with similar sessions planned in Nakuru and Kakamega counties. The Ministry of Education indicated that by January 2026, all targeted teachers will have completed training in readiness for the transition to Senior School.

During the event, Prof. Bitok also received 25 laptops donated by Intel Corporation to support the ongoing teacher training and promote integration of digital technology in teaching and learning in schools.

The four day workshop has brought together STEM Heads of Department from sixteen counties, including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Tharaka Nithi, Nyeri, Kitui, Makueni, Isiolo, and Kajiado.
