Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Bitok has concluded high-level talks with teachers’ unions and associations to finalise the composition of a 10,000-member delegation that will head to State House, Nairobi, this Friday.

The delegation, drawn from the country’s major education stakeholders, is expected to represent teachers at all levels in what is seen as one of the largest education-focused gatherings at the State House in recent years.

According to resolutions from the planning meeting, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) will send 3,300 delegates, while the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) will field 2,000 delegates. The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) will send 400 delegates.

The Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) has been allocated 2,300 slots, while the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) will send 2,000 members. This brings the total number of participants to exactly 10,000 representatives.

PS Bitok, who has been spearheading discussions with the unions and stakeholders, said the move was aimed at ensuring inclusivity and fairness in the delegation.

He noted that every category of teachers and school leaders had been factored in to give a holistic perspective of the education sector during deliberations at State House.

“This meeting will provide a platform for teachers and government leaders to engage constructively on issues affecting the sector,” said a senior official familiar with the preparations.

He added, “The goal is to strengthen cooperation and find solutions to challenges facing teachers and learners across the country.

The event is expected to address key issues, including teacher welfare, staffing gaps, infrastructure development, and the ongoing implementation of the competency-based curriculum (CBC). Sources within the Ministry of Education indicated that President William Ruto will preside over the meeting and make policy pronouncements aimed at improving the teaching profession and learning outcomes.

Teachers’ unions and associations have welcomed the planned engagement, saying it is an opportunity to deepen dialogue with the government on policy and reforms.

Education analysts also say the size and diversity of the delegation underscores the importance the administration places on teachers as the backbone of the education system.
