Provide MCAs with kitty to develop school infrastructure, Woman Rep urges

Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda has called on the Kakamega County government to introduce a fund for Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to initiate development projects especially in schools in their wards.

Muhanda defended the MCAs against backlash from the public over their inability to start development projects because they lack funds they can rely on.

Speaking in Malava sub-county during Mugai Shirugu MCA Peter Wanami’s thanksgiving ceremony, the County MP asked residents not to expect much as their hands were financially tied and could only initiate programmes being funded by the county itself.

“These MCAs you are seeing here are under duress from you people who want roads, water and infrastructure but support their quest to be allocated a kitty where they will be able to initiate and implement some of these projects you are requesting for,” she said.

She added: “For now, they are at the mercies of governors who demand loyalty in exchange for consideration for funding unlike MPs who have NG-CDF and Women MPs with the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).”

Muhanda also called on the county government to consider awarding them with security as they were prone to attacks from irate public and political rivals after the stabbing and later demise of Kisa West MCA, an incident which has since been linked to his fallout with his area MP.

On education he hailed the efforts put in place by the area MCA and urged residents to reelect him to streamline education standards in the ward.

“Your MCA is a retired school head who has passion for education in his heart and it is one of his major agendas in his manifesto and so far he has started working by looking for well-wishers to support destitute students through fee payment and improving school infrastructure,” she said.

MCA Wanami assured locals that he was ready to work for them and should be considered for re-lection come 2027.
