Promote TVETs to achieve Vision 2030

EDUCATION TVET

As Kenya strives to meet the targets envisaged in Vision 2030 in the near future, the Government must actively and continuously promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes.
The decision is based on the realisation that the country can best accelerate its development agenda only if the citizens are turned into a highly productive and competitive workforce.
And to achieve that, the Government through Vision 2030 proposes intensified application of science, technology and innovation to raise productivity and efficiency by developing critical mass of skilled youths and adults in many technical fields.
The creation of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA)) mandated to promote access to equity, quality and relevance in Technical and Vocational and Training by regulating, inspecting accrediting and licensing institutions, trainers and programmes, present an unprecedented opportunity to millions of Kenyans to uplift themselves from poverty.
The negative perception associated with TVET may largely be attributed to the past chaotic situations within which technical and vocational schools operated. It should be noted that times have since changed.
Today, there’s a comprehensive national TVET policy in place, and centres of excellence are being established across the country, complete with qualified trainers and modern equipment.
It is time we changed our attitude towards vocational and technical courses if we are to achieve individual and collective development goals.
The Government must increase funding and upgrade equipment to enable TVET institutions to support activities envisaged under the blueprint.
