Promote teachers every three years, KNUT demands

By Kage Njoroge

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) will not accept programmes drafted by the employer which could hamper teachers’ career progression.
According to the union’s Deputy National Treasurer James Ndiku, teachers are ready to go on strike to demand for deserved promotions.
Ndiku told the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to ensure that members do not stay in one job group for more than three years.
He pointed out that TSC is making new polices which could hinder career growth and promotions.
He was addressing Murang’a South Branch Annual General Meeting at Kariguini Primary School, where he was accompanied by Assistant National Treasurer Hassan Ali and a contingent of union officials.
The meeting was called by branch Executive Secretary John Njata and other local officials.
Ndiku warned that the TSC has up to end of September to effect promotions of teachers who have acquired degrees and other professional training.
The official warned that failure by TSC to agree on the issue could result in industrial action.
Further, the union rejected an assessment tool called TPAD and told members to stop filling and submitting them to the commission. Hassan Ali demanded that the commission stops transferring teachers under the delocalization regulation.
On a different matter, Njata explained his branch had initiated some income-generating projects to address financial interests of the members.
These include a housing society which is buying land for the members, bus project, education and benevolent fund which support needs of teachers.
Njata said the projects are geared towards benefitting teachers by adding value to the salaries through investment.
