As she enjoys her retirement, former KNUT branch chairperson, Mrs. Agnes Kadzo Unda had a chat with Education News on her journey to the helm of the giant union.
Prior to heading the region, Mrs. Unda joined the union in 2001 and was elected the Woman Representative for Malindi branch up to 2006. She then vied for the chairperson seat where she trumped her opponents to emerge the winner.
She not only headed the union from 2006 to 2020 but was also appointed KNUT Coast region Secretary from the same year up to 2011.
After her Secretary stint, Mrs. Unda was appointed KNUT National Trustee up to 2018.
This is where her story began.
Speaking at her residence in Ganda in Malindi sub county, Kilifi county, Mrs. Unda stated that she was born in 1960 at Mnyenzeni village, Kaloleni Sub County in Kilifi County.
She joined nursery school in 1967 at Mnyenzeni Primary school in Kaloleni sub county and later did Standard One to Standard Seven at the same school 1968 until 1974.
She then had her Form One to Form Four studies at St. John’s Girls Secondary School from 1975 to 1978.
From 1979 to 1980, she was employed as an Untrained Teacher and posted to Mapimo Primary school in Magarini sub county.
In 1980, she says that she left teaching and joined Kagumo Teachers training College to train as a P1 teacher up to 1982.
After college, she was posted to Ganda Primary school in Malindi sub county from 1982 to 1991 then went to HGM Primary school in Malindi town up to 2002.
In 2002, she was transferred to St. Andrew Primary school in Malindi town where she stayed until 2007.
That same year, she transferred to Mkaomoto Primary school in Ganda Ward up to 2020 when she retired from the teaching profession after reaching the government retirement age of 60 years
Her age did not deter her from furthering her education as in 2014, she enrolled for a Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the Kenya Methodist University up to 2017 when she graduated.
