Professors call for flexible entry grades to boost teacher education pathways

Professor Ondigii Samson, Executive Dean of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at Kenyatta University, during an exclusive interview with Education News at Mombasa Beach Hotel, Mombasa County, recently.

Senior education scholars have urged the government to allow students with lower KCSE grades to upgrade their qualifications and pursue teaching as a career progression.

Professor Ondigii Samson, Executive Dean of the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at Kenyatta University, stated that students with a C– grade should be allowed to start with a certificate and progress step by step.

“Students who scored C– in KCSE should be allowed to upgrade to do a certificate with KNEC, then thereafter to upgrade from C– to C plain,” he told Education News.

They were speaking during the Teacher Education Conference for Education stakeholders, held recently at the Mombasa Beach Hotel in Mombasa County.

He added that students who score C plain should qualify for a diploma, and those with C+ should be admitted to university for degree programmes.

“Students who scored C plain in KCSE should be allowed to upgrade to C+ (plus). With a C+, one qualifies for admission to do a degree at university level anywhere in the World,” said Prof. Ondigii.

Professor John Aluko Orodho of Kenyatta University supported the idea, noting that the Kenya Qualifications Development Authority (KQDA) already provides pathways for students with low grades to rise through TVET to university level.

“Kenya Qualification Development Authority allows students with low grades, like E, D–, D plain and D+, to join TVET to acquire basic technical skills in different fields to start with certificates in artisans and then rise through to university level,” he explained.

Kenyatta University professors urge the government to allow flexible upgrading of KCSE grades to open more pathways into teacher education.
