Yesterday, Prof Margaret Hutchinson assumed the role of University of Nairobi (UoN) Vice Chancellor in acting capacity following her appointment by the institution council led by Prof Amukowa Anangwe

Prof Hutchinson’s appointment came after the suspension of the university VC Prof Stephen Kiama Gitahi on August 2, 2024.

Prof Kiama’s suspension, which was announced with immediate effect, has intensified the on-going issues surrounding his leadership. The decision led to a tense scene when Prof Kiama arrived at his office the following day to find police officers stationed there, informed by their commander that he was barred from entry.

In response to the leadership changes, the University of Nairobi Council has also made several key appointments to enhance university management. Prof Ayub Gitau, the former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, has been appointed as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Additionally, Prof Francis Mulaa, formerly the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, will take on the role of Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Enterprise.
