Prof Thomas Kimeli Cheruiyot has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of The University of Eldoret.

The appointment was made public by the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu on August 25.

Prof Cheruiyot takes over from Prof Teresia Akenga whose time in office expired after serving as Vice Chancellor for ten years.

In his new capacity as university boss, Prof Cheruiyot who hails from Elgeyo Marakwet will serve for a renewable term of five years and will be responsible for the general development projects of the institution.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich welcomed his appointment saying since independence the County has never had a Vice Chancellor despite having top-notch academicians.

“We thank the President, CS Machogu for appointing Prof Cheruiyot to be the new VC of the University of Eldoret. He was our KV University task force chair and has participated in shaping the Kenya University education sector for years,” Rotich said.

According to Governor Rotich, Prof Cheruiyot’s humility and hard work will take the University to greater heights.

Prof Cheruiyot’s appointment comes alongside the appointment of other new vice-chancellors to various universities across the country by the Ministry of Education.

Interviews for the new VCs were conducted by the Public Service Commission (PSC) and they are expected to undergo training in procurement, financial management and people management.

Notably, Prof Cheruiyot was nominated months after the PSC advertised a vacant position in the institution as the term of the previous boss came to an end.
