Probe self before persecuting man behind KCSE leakage, KNEC told

Stephen Nyang'au Mbeche. He was arrested yesterday in Nyamira over distribution of examination materials.

Residents from Masaba North have asked the Police to launch investigations at KNEC headquarters to arrest the main culprits who leaked national examination papers to Stephen Mbeche, the suspect who was arrested yesterday over distribution of KCSE exam papers through his social media channels.

Led by Emily Mokeira, they said that it was unfair that the official who leaked the papers will walk scot-free while the ‘retailer’ will face severe punishment.

Mokeira said that with the poorly performing economy and high unemployment rates, people were being forced to use unfair means to survive, thus the KNEC officers who leaked the papers should be arrested and punished first.

Officer Muriithi, the lead DCI Officer in the sub-county, said that they arrested Mbeche after intense surveillance in collaboration with KNEC officers.

“The man created a Telegram channel where he extorted cash from more than 800 clueless candidates and their parents by purporting to sell examination materials,” he said.

After a thorough search by the Police at his premises that host a cyber cafe, they confiscated a laptop and mobile phone which were the primary tools used in perpetrating the exam malpractice.

“All KCSE papers are with me now. Big schools are already in touch with my papers. Join VIP channel early to compete with big schools in my VIP private channel. B+ and above is assured and guaranteed after payments,” reads a post from the channel.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Keroka Police Station to record a statement and for interrogation.

However, a junior officer at the station told Education News that the suspect was later snuck to an unknown location to stem overcrowding by the public at the station.

Efforts to reach both Nyamira county and Masaba North sub-county education directors, Joshua Kega and Gabriel Ogano respectively, via phone went unanswered by the time of publishing this story.

Nyamira County Commissioner Erastus Mbui confirmed the suspect’s arrest.
