Investigations are underway following the death of a Grade Seven pupil at Kichapa Primary School in Sogoo area, Narok South, who allegedly died after being beaten by her biological mother.

The pupil, identified as Peris Chepngeno, reportedly fell ill after the incident and was first taken to Sogoo Dispensary before being referred to Longisa Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

Area Chief Benerd Bunei confirmed the incident, saying the girl’s condition deteriorated after the alleged beating.

“The child became unwell after the beating and was rushed to Sogoo Dispensary. Doctors later referred her to Longisa Referral Hospital for further treatment,” said Bunei.

Chepngeno was pronounced dead upon arrival at Longisa Hospital.

The chief urged parents to exercise restraint and caution when disciplining their children.

“We are asking parents to be careful when disciplining their children. Discipline should not result in harm,” he said.

The deceased’s uncle, Ezra Kipyator, said he received information about the incident from the village elder and immediately took action.

“I received a report from the village elder and rushed the girl to hospital. Unfortunately, her condition worsened,” he said.

Kipyator appealed to the government to intervene and ensure justice is served.

“We are calling on the government to step in and ensure that this child gets justice,” he added.

Village elder Simion Kones also condemned the incident and urged parents to adopt alternative forms of discipline.

“When children make mistakes, parents should look for other ways of correcting them instead of resorting to excessive punishment,” said Kones.

The girl’s mother has since been taken to Ololulunga Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been preserved at the Longisa Hospital mortuary. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted to establish the exact cause of death as investigations continue.
